Art and Non-@rt
In an age of vertiginous global transformations, artistic experiences increase and link according to unexpected ways. Artistic expressions, such as fashions, customs, behaviors, and ideas express their time and reflect the society in which they occur. Therefore, any attempt to define with coherence what is the art and what is not proves unsuccessful. The aesthetic canon is just relative and varies according to history. So we undertook reflections on contemporary art, trying to relate them to the work and the activity of an artist, Frank MacYouch, who, despite being outside of any labeling, calls himself, in a joking way, a non-artist. He promotes thus an idea of art and "making art", whose ambition is that to let arts converge and amalgamate into an original synthesis, made of styles, expressions, and procedures that operate in a "border area" between art and non-art. In this area, "hybridization" and contamination are not only common practice but a source of inspiration and guidance. Tools are multifaceted, from graphics to painting, from photography to computer graphics. Our reflections, besides, have a discursive nature, being structured around thematic ideas, without claiming to be systematic. Sometimes reflections include explanatory notes and sometimes in-depth analysis. A detailed description of the main artist's projects follows soon after and illustrates techniques and materials used by the artist, above all, methods and tools that, starting from a few basics, defined "algorithms", allow each project to become effective through research and experimentation, producing abstract compositions and unconventional paintings, based on bright colors and dynamic structures. The entire site aims "to be read", not just browsed. Therefore, it isn't a showcase full of "good intentions", nor a virtual bulletin board we can access and then forget through a hasty "like". According to the intentions of the author, we should read and consult the site of Ars Hybrida as a book because it preserves its same structure and, as a book, we should deepen it chapter by chapter, page by page. And, to satisfy those who prefer a traditional reading to web browsing, the author also published a printable version of the site, making it available both as PDF and EPUB. Enjoy the reading!
This section describes the concept of "hybrid art", as a rich mixture of genres and trends. We analyze here, the "reference models" of the artist, i.e. the set of techniques and procedures used by him to carry out his works. The goal of these reflections is to allow anyone who wants to experiment with hybrid art and creativity, to regain his own inner space and the human dimension involved in it. The "artistic laboratory" is, therefore, an ideal place for meditation and inner stability, not only for ideas and creative work. Topics covered in this section are:
The art of assemblage
An indispensable introduction
Reaching a goal with the slightest effort is not a commonplace, as it might appear. Because of its complexity, the creative act is difficult to plan all the way; art is a process ... continue
Between graphics and painting
From layout to final assembly
Gontemporary artists use different means and sometimes combine them within a single work. From painting to drawing, from photography to sculpture ... continue
This section describes the projects realized by the artist and analyzes not only techniques and materials, but also methods and procedures, through which each project, starting from a few ideas, which the artist defines "algorithms", takes shape, little by little, turning itself into a powerful and meticulous work of research and experimentation. This method considers both unexpected contingencies and the use of special procedures and unconventional materials. The projects analyzed below are six:
Visual extrapolations
Extrapolating from reality
Sometimes we can plan a journey or adventure months before, but circumstances, together with passion, observation, and exploration, play more often ... continue
Horizontal plots
Horizontal schemes
'Horizontal plots' and the subsequent 'Vertical plots', if we want to consider them from the view of experimentation and technical innovation, can appear ... continue
This section shows works by the artist Frank MacYouch, who is also the author of all texts and reflections available in this site. Pictures divide into groups, by size and shape, to facilitate their view, in sequential order. Each gallery exhibits no more than 50 paintings. To avoid slow page loading, we reduced image resolution to the detriment of quality. However, if this benefits visualization, first for those who don't own a fast connection, current compression format (.jpeg) can cause "grainy images". So, it was necessary to eliminate all degraded pictures. As a result, collections are incomplete and cataloging work is provisional. Therefore, those who need to examine them in high resolution, can visit our Instagram page, where they are almost all exhibited in high resolution.
rs Hybrida intends besides to broaden its artistic research, opening and promoting its free project to anyone who wants to engage with "hybrid art", as extensively theorized by us on the pages of this site. To this purpose, we published a printable version of the site, in the form of an e-book, Ars Hybrida: an atypical painting manual for artists and non-artists, for all those who prefer traditional reading to the Internet. In the end, a Contact section is also available for a visit, information and details.
